Profiles of Purpose–Cherie Blair’s vision to empower women with technology

Access to technology is emerging as a powerful weapon for fighting gender inequality, with the potential to transform the lives of millions of women.

A new report by the Cherie Blair Foundation for Women sought the experiences of more than 1,100 women entrepreneurs across 81 low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) in late 2023–and it tells a fascinating story. Challenges faced by women entrepreneurs are further amplified in LMICs, where limited access to education and financial services, and gaps in legal protections create additional hurdles. But a crucial area of focus of this research is access to technology, which could drive women entrepreneurs’ progress faster and more intuitively than ever before.

Cherie Blair CBE KC–a leading King’s Counsel and international human rights lawyer–established the Cherie Blair Foundation for Women in order to specifically focus on supporting the business endeavors of women, and much of the Foundation’s success comes from partnering with global organizations. Soon after the release of this new report Cherie Blair spoke with Jean Sung, J.P. Morgan Private Bank’s Head of The Philanthropy Centre for Asia.

AI and the tech opportunity

Bridging the Divide: Women, Technology and Business Success has a number of positive indications: more than a third of respondents attributed new successes to improved access to business networks, both virtual and in-person, while another 24% highlighted increased digital inclusion as a key factor in their business accomplishments.

Remarkably, 44% of respondents said they already use generative AI tools in their business operations. Blair explained that many women are now using AI for content generation – particularly in producing marketing material for their websites and social media. “But an overwhelming number of them told us they really wanted more training as to how they could use these tools more effectively. And that's inspired us as a foundation to think that we need to do more in this field.”

The report, which was launched on 2024 International Women’s Day, found that the three biggest business challenges cited in the previous year were access to finance, then the challenging macroeconomic environment, followed by customer retention.

The unfortunate by-product 

But with new digital tools can come unwanted experiences. “We discovered that 60% of the women we worked with had been adversely affected in some way by using technology for their business,” said Blair.

These experiences include sharing or threatening to share offensive materials, sexist/hateful language, stalking and harassment, and creating manipulated content.

 14% of women experienced or witnessed such online Gender Based Violence daily and 45.4% of respondents reported that these incidences had an impact on their business success. “20% of the women we spoke to said it had actually adversely impacted their business, and 9% said it made them withdraw from using the internet to sell their business.”

Ensuring women benefit from growth

“We want to reach a million women by 2030,” says Blair, “and we want to lead a movement of people who are focusing on uplifting women entrepreneurs, because if we enable them, they provide not only jobs, not only incomes and support for their families, but they also tend to also have a social impact in supporting others or working for the environment.”

Blair uses the example of the South American nation, Guyana, to emphasize her point. The oil giant ExxonMobil recently discovered oil in the country–and this looks set to transform what is technically one of the poorest countries into one of the richest. But what steps can be taken towards ensuring that this wealth is spread across society? The Foundation’s HerVenture app has been introduced in the country, along with its online and face-to-face Road to Finance training program – both of which aim to give women the financial literacy and confidence that enables them to secure finance and loans from banks and other donors, and successfully grow their businesses.

Already, one in 25 Guyanese women have made use of at least one of the Cherie Blair Foundation for Women’s programs, pointing to a bright future for both women’s economic empowerment and gender equality more broadly in the country–“We have been there for two years working with women business owners to ensure that women are getting their fair share of the boom that is absolutely coming to Guyana.”

Investment strategies are selected from both J.P. Morgan and third-party asset managers and are subject to a review process by our manager research teams.
