Michael R. Duckworth is a Managing Director in the Private Bank of J.P. Morgan. With over 30 years of investment management and transactional, financial and operational experience, Mr. Duckworth leads our coverage of Private Equity Funds, Hedge Funds, Asset Managers, and their associated partners and families; advising them on strategies to preserve, protect and build wealth. Mr. Duckworth is also building out a team to increase our client reach and support the Private Bank’s expansion in the West.
Prior to joining J.P. Morgan, Mr. Duckworth was the Chief Operating Officer of a $5B family office where he was responsible for strategy development, manager selection and investment oversight. During this time he also served as the Chief Executive Officer of National Lambda Rail, a national fiber optic network serving the education community.
Mr. Duckworth was previously a Partner at The Yucaipa Companies, a $3.5B private equity firm with investments primarily in retail, manufacturing, media, distribution and logistics. While at Yucaipa Mr. Duckworth was also the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Source Interlink Company, a public, vertically integrated, media, publishing, merchandising and distribution company with revenues exceeding $2.5B. Source publishes magazines including Motor Trend, Automobile and Hot Rod, distributes magazines, books, DVD’s and CD’s, and designs, manufactures and installs checkout fixtures and displays.
Prior to Yucaipa, Mr. Duckworth was a Managing Director at Merrill Lynch where he headed Financial Sponsor Coverage and Leveraged Finance in the Western Region, and at Bankers Trust Company. During his 17 years in investment banking, Mr. Duckworth originated, advised and executed transactions involving mergers, acquisitions, public and private equity capital, bank, mezzanine and high yield debt financing, while managing relationships with private equity sponsors including: Kohlberg Kravis Roberts, Leonard Green Partners and Texas Pacific Group among several others.
He received an MBA from the UCLA Anderson School of Management and graduated magna cum laude with a BA in Economics from the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA). Mr. Duckworth previously served on the board of Pathmark Stores, Inc (PTMK), Source Interlink Company (SORC) and Medisens, a medical product startup.
He resides in Manhattan Beach with his wife and two daughters where he is President of the Manhattan Beach Education Foundation Endowment (MBEF Endowment), an active board member of the Santa Monica Bay Junior Rowing Association, and a prior board member of the American Youth Soccer Organization (AYSO).
