CAROLINE LAMBRIGHT: Going public is an exciting milestone, but for shareholders, it can also bring a new set of questions. After an IPO, you may find that a significant portion of your wealth is tied to one company. And with market volatility, lock-up restrictions, and other considerations, deciding what to do next isn't always straightforward.
That's why it can be helpful to start thinking about your long-term strategy early, and understand how your position fits into your broader financial goals. So what are the possibilities? There are many ways to approach a concentrated equity position. But a simple way to think about this is through four scenarios-- hedging, monetizing, borrowing, and giving.
Hedging strategies can help you manage the risks that come with having a large portion of your wealth tied to a single stock while still considering your goals and circumstances. Monetization strategies can help you access liquidity from your position, including sales and in certain situations, without selling shares outright. You may also be able to use your position as collateral to access liquidity without selling your shares. And if wealth transfer or philanthropy is part of your plan, there may also be ways to incorporate your shares into that strategy.
These financial decisions can be challenging, and it would be best to get advice to decide which strategy would best suit your long-term plans. That might mean accessing liquidity, managing risk, diversifying your wealth, or planning for the future. Even during a lock-up period, there may be steps you can take to prepare, and when the restrictions are lifted, we can help you explore a range of strategies tailored to your individual circumstances.
Through our partnership with JP Morgan's investment bank, we can also connect clients with the firm's broader capabilities and institutional expertise. Whether you're preparing for an IPO, navigating a lock-up period, or already managing a concentrated position, we're here to help you understand your long-term wealth strategy.
