Packaging

Tomorrow’s food

As plastics litter the planet, countries and consumers increasingly demand packaging with materials that are recyclable and/or biodegradable, such as glassine and Kraft paper (both made from wood pulp).1

Today’s investment

Explore companies creating and recycling sustainable packaging materials and methods. In 2023, the sustainable packaging market produced global revenues of $270B. By 2028, these revenues are expected to hit almost $400B.2

Breakfast Bar

Tomorrow’s food

Organic fruits and nuts use biocontrol methods in the production process i.e. natural products that help plants defend against pests, rather than plant-damaging man-made pesticides, which negatively impact the planet and human health.3

Today’s investment

Look for companies innovating and dispensing biocontrol methods. The biocontrol market grew to $7B in 2024 with an annual growth rate of 17%.4

Plant Milk

Tomorrow’s food

Compared to traditional cow’s milk, producing alternative milks (out of oat, soy or peas) emit significantly less greenhouse gas and uses far less land and water.5

Today’s investment

As consumer preferences shift due to increased environmental awareness, the market size of alternative milks was valued at $33B in 2024 and is expected to grow 13% annually to almost $100B by 2032.6

Vegetables

Tomorrow’s food

Indoor, vertical farming not only drastically reduces the space, pesticides and water needed to grow crops, but also allows for year-round production, eliminating crops’ vulnerability to extreme weather.9

Today’s investment

Institutional investors and large corporations are investing heavily in vertical farming. The market is posed to exceed $25B by 2032.10

Bread

Tomorrow’s food

Wheat for bread is increasingly grown using precision agriculture technologies-such as GPS-based software, robotics and AI data processing. These innovative technologies increase yields while decreasing the use of resources needed and therefore costs.7

Today’s investment

Companies are innovating in all aspects of the precision ag market (software, robotics, AI data processing), helping drive productivity and profitability, which is expected to grow at an annual growth rate of 13% from 2024 to 2030.8

Beverage Packaging

Tomorrow’s food

Aluminium bottles are the most recyclable packaging on the planet, with 75% of all aluminium ever produced still available for use.11

Today’s investment

The aluminium can market is anticipated to expand at an annual growth rate of almost 5% between 2023 and 2033.12

Plant-based Protein

Tomorrow’s food

Plant-based protein is increasingly popular among consumers as an alternative to meat; it also is far less stressful on the environment to produce, as plant-based protein has a 77% smaller climate change burden than beef, not to mention it uses less water to create.13

Today’s investment

The $1.5T animal protein market is ready to be disrupted as consumers increasingly focus on their health and the environmental impact of their food choices. The market for plant-based protein is estimated at $14B in 2024 and is expected to grow over 7% annually to reach $20B by 2029.14

Alt-Pasta

Tomorrow’s food

Pasta made with pea protein is less environmentally burdensome than its wheat-based counterpart. In fact, peas have the ability to improve soil health by naturally enriching it with nutrients. Additionally, when it comes to proteins, peas are a more environmentally friendly option than traditional sources such as livestock, which require much more water and land.18

Today’s investment

Pea protein is expected to lead the alternative-protein market in the short and medium term. The demand for pea protein is expected to continue growing; projected to grow over 12% annually from $650M in 2024 to $1.6B by 2032.19

Water

Tomorrow’s food

Water systems managed by advanced technologies can not only help reduce overall consumption but also improve the recycling and treatment of water used in our food system.15

Today’s investment

As attention on the world’s water crisis—and ambition to solve it—grows, expect corporations across key sectors of the economy to expand their water conservation efforts and to seek solutions that enhance water delivery and quality. While agriculture is responsible for 70% of freshwater withdrawals globally, vertical farming innovation enables this consumption to drop 99% relative to traditional farming practices.16,17
