Julia Chu is an Executive Director and the Head of Family Governance Advisory at J.P. Morgan Private Bank. Julia leads the practice in guiding wealthy families to convey their values and priorities through future generations. She serves as an experienced sounding board to share effective practices leveraged by significant families worldwide.
Julia and her team follow an active inquiry approach to develop each family’s governance system, documenting their history, distilling their core principles and articulating their common vision. Whether clients are interested in philanthropy, investment protocols or other important legacy elements, this North Star stands as the guidepost for establishing the role of the family members in implementing policies and ground rules. Julia leverages the internal specialists of the firm to heighten the impact of holistic planning. She is especially intent on cultivating the next generation, which she finds is the key to a successful future.
A former practicing attorney, Julia led the National Family Governance practice at Credit Suisse for six years before joining J.P. Morgan. She is considered a thought leader in this space, and is a sought-after contributor to The New York Times, Forbes, the Financial Times and Barron’s. Julia has authored articles for Trusts and Estates magazine and the Leimberg Estate Planning Newsletter, and regularly speaks on charitable giving. She has lectured for a master’s level course at New York University’s Heyman Center for Philanthropy and Fundraising.
Julia received an LL.M. in Taxation from New York University School of Law, a J.D. from Boston University and a B.A. from Cornell University. She has been awarded the GEN Certificate in Family Business Advising (CFBA) and the Certificate in Wealth Advising (CFWA) by the Family Firm Institute.
Active in art and philanthropy, Julia currently chairs the Audit Committee of the Brooklyn Arts Council board and led several Art Succession panels during her membership on the Non-Profit and Art Law Committees of the New York City Bar. In addition, she has evaluated fellowship candidates for the social entrepreneurship organization Echoing Green.
