A Library

Hi, I'm Deborah Langford, managing director and Head of Black Wealth Initiatives, and I am super excited to be here to talk about the JP Morgan 2023 summer reading list Choice, a library. I love this book. I saw myself in it because I remember going to the library when I had to have a library card and go through the turns style. I also loved it because it just showed what an average kid could do after doing something with her family member, finishing her chores. You can be enthusiastic about going to the library and what you can discover. And she discovered that it was a place for her to be free. It was a place for her to be wonderful. It was a place for her to be me. And I think having diversity in children's books and having culture in children's books that really don't have anything to do specifically to their diversity is really what is so important and needed in children's books. When you can introduce culture to other cultures, it becomes familiar. It doesn't become the other. And I think to have Nikki Giovanni and Erin Robinson with her beautiful illustrations take me on a short journey to go to the library, I I think it's gonna be a phenomenal choice for the summer reading list for all families to share. And I'm, I'm, I'm just really excited on a place that a child can say it's a place to be free. It's a place to be wonderful. And it's a place to be me.
When you look at this book, this isn't a book just for black families and black girls. This is a book for everyone because it's a universal story. There's a young girl who's doing something for her family member and then with enthusiasm racists to the library where it's a place that she can be wonderful and she can be free and she can be me. That should resonate with boys and girls of her age. That should resonate with every parent that would want their child to be excited about reading. And that's why I think showing culture in books and showing different images in books can help us showcase that we actually have more in common than we have differences. And I think starting early with something so beautiful as this with Nikki Giovanni's words in Aaron Robinson's amazing illustrations, it's gonna have a lot of positive impact.
What I am especially proud to be a part of JP Morgan and to even have a summer reading list is that when you can discover a book that you think represents culture and in an interesting just regular run of the mill day, that this is the type of present, this is the type of item to have in your home that can communicate just how people have similar traits and similar interests, like going to the library and like having a range of emotions in books and wanting a place to be free. And that's why it's important for us to start as early as possible, showing books to children of all backgrounds, of all interests, different people that have a same and similar experience that they may be having or something that surprises them.

Amazing
Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders Who Inspire Us All

Hi, I'm Gloria Chang Yip. Head of Asian Wealth Initiatives for JP Morgan Private Pink. And I'm here today to tell you about a special book I've been reading with my children. It's called Amazing Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders Who Inspire Us All.
This book was so special to myself and my family. It was written by Olympic gold medalist Maya and Alex Shani because they felt compelled to share inspiring stories from Asian-American and Pacific Islander history. And this really talks about 36 men and women whose triumphs illuminated the world. Uh, they include everything from America's early history to a range of abilities, identities, and races, and their stories of origin across social and civil rights. Um, people who made their dreams come true and prevailed against all odds.
You know, when I was a child, I loved reading so much so that I would hide under the covers in my bed and read with a flashlight. And I've now rediscovered that my love of reading again through the eyes of my children. So every night we have a bedtime ritual where they pick a book and we sit down and we read it together. And I think it's so important to use books in their early lives, uh, because books are a form of connection, a window to the world....
I have a eight-year-old son and a six-year-old daughter and we sat together and read this for bedtime reading earlier this week. And of the 36 characters, I asked them each to pick their favorite. My daughter Celine picked Dr. Mabel Lee. Mabel Lee. Actually in 1912, despite being only 16 years old, she led 10,000 people to march through the streets of New York City. And it was one of the largest protests from women's suffrage. She helped lead the pack and even though immigrants like her being Chinese were not allowed to vote, she still fought for the cause. Believing that voting for good leaders would open doors for more women. In the end, she ended up devoting her life to education and civil rights. This really inspired my daughter to believe that even at a young age she could make an impact and a difference in the world.
My son, who is eight this year started surfing and so of course he picked Duke Kahan Moku as his idol…
a native Hawaiian who was known for being a three time Olympic swim champion, but also had petitioned the Olympic Committee in the early 19 hundreds to have surfing included as part of the Olympic sports. Carissa Moore in her debut, um, in the 2020 Olympics actually won a gold medal, uh, for surfing and made his dream come true 70 years later.
Read books together. Books can serve as the catalyst for connections, learning, and curiosity from a young age.
