Beyond the shine: Beware of gold scams

Gold scam risks

  • Gold scams exploit trust, fear, and urgency—often by claiming that precious metals are a ‘safe’ store of value.
  • Fraudsters may impersonate government agencies, bank employees or other authority figures to pressure victims into buying gold or transferring assets.
  • At J.P. Morgan, we maintain controls and processes designed to help identify scams and protect you and your information.

Scams are not one-size-fits-all. While many involve social engineering—the use of psychological manipulation to influence behavior or extract information—each scam can be executed differently and with varying levels of sophistication. Gold scams are becoming increasingly common as fraudsters find more convincing ways to impersonate government agencies, bank representatives or other trusted parties.

Scammers thrive wherever value and emotion intersect. Gold is widely viewed as a trusted source of value—whether as an investment, a collectible or jewelry—and often perceived as stable and “safe” during uncertain times. Fraudsters take advantage of this perception to pressure people into moving money quickly “to protect it.”

1. Recognizing pressure tactics

Fraudsters often create a false sense of urgency to override careful decision making. You may be told your assets are at risk, that you must act immediately, or that secrecy is required to protect your money.

  • Pause before acting: Be cautious of anyone who pressures you to make quick financial decisions or discourages you from consulting a trusted contact.
  • Question urgent instructions: Legitimate organizations will not require immediate purchases of gold or other precious metals to resolve suspected fraud.
  • Watch for secrecy requests: Fraudsters may claim an investigation is confidential and instruct you not to tell family, advisors or bank representatives.

Key considerations

  • Are you being asked to act immediately without time to verify the request?
  • Has someone told you to keep the conversation secret?
  • Have you spoken with a trusted advisor, family member or your J.P. Morgan team before taking action?

2. Verifying who is contacting you

Scammers may pose as government officials, bank employees, law enforcement or technology support representatives. They may spoof caller ID, use official-sounding language or reference personal details to appear legitimate.

  • Verify independently: If someone claims to represent an organization, end the interaction at once and contact that organization using a trusted phone number or official channel you source independently.
  • Do not rely on caller ID: Phone numbers, names and email addresses can be spoofed or manipulated to appear credible.
  • Know what legitimate organizations will not do: Government agencies and reputable financial institutions will not instruct you to purchase gold, hand it to a courier or move funds to a so-called “safe account.”

Key considerations

  • Have you contacted the organization through a trusted channel you found yourself?
  • Could the caller ID, email address or message have been spoofed?
  • Is the request consistent with how legitimate institutions normally communicate?

3. Protecting your personal safety and assets

Some gold scams escalate beyond digital communication and ask victims to purchase precious metals, share a home address or meet an unknown person. These requests can create both financial and physical safety risks.

  • Do not hand over assets: Never give cash, gold, jewelry or precious metals to an unknown person, courier or supposed investigator.
  • Protect your location: Do not share your home address or agree to meet unfamiliar individuals as part of a financial or fraud-related request.
  • Understand recovery risk: Once funds or precious metals are transferred, recovery can be difficult or impossible.

Key considerations

  • Are you being asked to buy gold, withdraw cash or move assets in an unusual way?
  • Has anyone asked for your address or proposed an in-person pickup?
  • Have you considered the personal safety risks before engaging further?

4. Securing your information and devices

Fraudsters may use suspicious links, attachments or remote-access tools to obtain sensitive information, monitor activity or compromise accounts. Protecting your digital footprint can reduce the information available for scammers to exploit.

  • Avoid risky links and attachments: Do not click unknown links or open unexpected attachments, especially in messages involving urgency, secrecy or financial instructions.
  • Deny remote access: Never allow a stranger to remotely access your device, as it can expose sensitive information and enable fraud.
  • Limit information exposure: Protect details about yourself, your organization and your finances so they cannot be used to build a more convincing scam.

Key considerations

  • Have you avoided clicking links or opening attachments from unexpected messages?
  • Has anyone asked to remotely access your device?
  • Are you limiting what personal, financial or organizational details you share publicly or with unknown contacts?

Looking ahead

Gold scam prevention starts with taking the time to confirm the identity of anyone who contacts you before moving money or revealing personal information. Slow down, verify independently and be cautious of anyone pressuring you to act quickly without clear, verifiable proof. As fraudsters continue to adapt their tactics, staying informed and maintaining strong verification habits can help reduce exposure.
